Discover East Side Mario's

If you’re craving hearty Italian comfort food in North Bay, East Side Mario's at 285 Lakeshore Dr, North Bay, ON P1A 2B9, Canada, is one of those spots that locals keep coming back to. I’ve stopped in more than a few times-once after a long road trip along Lake Nipissing and another time for a casual family dinner-and each visit felt easy, relaxed, and satisfyingly filling.

The location itself is convenient, especially if you’re staying nearby or just passing through the Lakeshore Drive area. Parking is straightforward, and the restaurant has that familiar, lively atmosphere the brand is known for: warm lighting, classic red-and-white accents, and the unmistakable buzz of people digging into big plates of pasta. It’s the kind of place where you can show up in jeans and feel perfectly at home.

Let’s talk about the menu, because that’s where this Italian chain really shines. Their famous All-You-Can-Eat Soup, Salad & Garlic Homeloaf is more than a catchy phrase-it’s genuinely generous. On my last visit, I started with the garden salad and minestrone soup. The salad was crisp and fresh, while the soup had that comforting tomato-and-herb depth you expect from traditional Italian recipes. According to Canada’s Food Guide, incorporating vegetables and legumes into meals supports balanced nutrition, and it’s nice to see options that aren’t just heavy carbs and cheese.

That said, most people come here for pasta, and rightly so. Dishes like Chicken Parmigiana, Spaghetti and Meatballs, and Linguine Chicken Tetrazzini are rich, filling, and designed for serious appetites. I once brought a friend who’s pretty particular about Italian food-he even follows recommendations from culinary authorities like the Italian Culinary Institute-and he admitted the sauce had a surprisingly authentic flavor for a casual dining chain. The marinara tasted slow-simmered, not overly sweet, with a balanced acidity that coated the pasta evenly.

For families, this spot works especially well. The kids’ menu offers smaller portions of classic favorites, and the staff tends to be patient and accommodating. During one busy Friday night, I noticed how efficiently the team handled multiple large tables without letting service slip. Orders came out hot, substitutions were handled correctly, and refills appeared before we had to ask. That kind of consistency builds trust, especially when you’re dining out with a group.

From a broader perspective, East Side Mario’s operates as part of a well-established Canadian restaurant group, and standardized food safety practices are part of that model. National chains in Canada follow strict provincial health regulations, and North Bay’s public health inspections ensure restaurants meet safety benchmarks. While individual experiences can vary depending on the day and staff, my visits have consistently reflected clean dining areas and well-maintained facilities.

If you’re watching your intake, you’ll appreciate that nutritional information is available upon request. Transparency around calories and allergens is increasingly important, especially as organizations like Health Canada emphasize informed food choices. It’s reassuring to know you can ask about ingredients or portion sizes if you have dietary concerns.

Reviews from other diners in North Bay often highlight the same themes: generous portions, friendly service, and good value for money. Of course, no restaurant is perfect. During peak hours, wait times can stretch, particularly on weekends. However, in my experience, the staff does their best to keep things moving and communicate clearly about delays.

Beyond pasta, the menu includes pizza, burgers, seafood, and desserts like their indulgent Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake. That variety makes it a practical choice when you’re dining with people who all want something different. It’s not fine dining, and it doesn’t pretend to be. Instead, it delivers exactly what it promises: comforting Italian-inspired dishes in a casual, welcoming setting.

Whether you’re a North Bay local looking for a reliable dinner spot or a traveler needing a satisfying meal after a long day, this Lakeshore Drive location offers a dependable experience built around hearty flavors, approachable service, and a menu designed to please a wide range of tastes.

  • Great service, food, atmosphere and prices. East Side Mario is always a good choice. Our most recent visit (Monday around 1pm) was no exception. Our server Heidi was friendly and enthusiastic, you couldn't help but be in a good mood. Food was fresh and delicious. With options to satisfy just about everyone, from starters to desert, and drink options (non-alcoholic and alcoholic). Stop reading this and go eat there already... or order delivery. The food is still delicious when delivered.
